Welcome to the Ohio Psychiatric Physicians Association (OPPA), the only statewide professional organization for physicians who specialize in psychiatry. Founded in 1950, as the third district branch of the American Psychiatric Association (APA), its members specialize in the diagnosis, treatment and prevention of mental illnesses, including substance use disorder. The OPPA is dedicated to promoting the highest quality care for people with mental disorders and to serving the professional needs of Ohio's psychiatric physicians. The OPPA is incorporated under the State of Ohio as a not-for-profit, scientific, organization.

Advocacy

The OPPA is your voice in Ohio to address issues of importance to psychiatry and your patients. The OPPA works everyday with members of the Ohio General Assembly, state agencies and regulatory bodies to shape legislation, regulations and policies that advance the profession of psychiatry and that ensure the highest quality of care for our patients and their families.

It is vital that we make our voices heard and our position known. We do this by lobbying activities, OPPAC contributions, and testifying before the Ohio General Assembly (the legislature). But the most effective way requires active participation of individual members of the OPPA.

Psychiatrists

Psychiatry is the branch of medicine focused on the diagnosis, treatment and prevention of mental, emotional and behavioral disorders.

A psychiatrist is a medical doctor (an M.D. or D.O.) who specializes in mental health, including substance use disorders. Psychiatrists are qualified to assess both the mental and physical aspects of psychological problems.

People seek psychiatric help for many reasons. The problems can be sudden, such as a panic attack, frightening hallucinations, thoughts of suicide, or hearing "voices." Or they may be more long-term, such as feelings of sadness, hopelessness, or anxiousness that never seem to lift or problems functioning, causing everyday life to feel distorted or out of control.
